The major city: Lubeck
As we all know the Hanseatic League consisted of a group of cities that were located in Middle Low Germany and it was established in 1358. The leagues main purpose was to focus on trades and economic interests, But it also was used as a way to protect the organization and the cities. Since the cities were small and alone from everyone else, the only protection they had was the guild. Lübeck was declared a free imperial city and it was seen as the Queen or the capital of the Hanseatic League. With Lübeck practically getting independence from the duke by buying back the city and setting laws that would make the city free trade and becoming one of the most powerful cities in the area. Frederick II is credited for declaring the city as a Free Imperial City, after this moment a collection of cities formed together to create one successful trade route.
The "Queen of the Hansa" truly is a beautiful city and well worth a visit! Here are some nice photos taken by another blogger! https://betweendistances.com/2017/09/04/luebeck/
ReplyDeleteLubeck is not exactly in "Middle Low Germany", was this city chosen because of its access to the sea or because it is nearest to the center of the Hanseatic Countries?
